Northern Parkway Scholars Take a Trip to Hofstra’s Basketball Practice Facility

Scholars Met with Basketball Players, Practiced Drills and Learned Leadership Skills from Hofstra’s Basketball Teams

Uniondale Union Free School District’s Northern Parkway scholars recently took a trip to Hofstra University and had the experience of a lifetime practicing their basketball skills with Hofstra’s basketball players and coaching staff.

“We have some exceptionally talented young basketball players at Northern Parkway,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil. “This field trip gave them the opportunity to meet some of Hofstra’s greats, from Coach Speedy Claxton, Hofstra’s Men’s Basketball coach, and Coach Brett Gunning, former NBA assistant coach for the Houston Rockets, to the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Our young basketeers honed their skills through ball handling, passing and catching, and shooting drills and even received valuable advice for on and off the court.”

Coach Speedy Claxton, a Hempstead native, coached the scholars through a series of drills and discussed his experiences with the game of basketball. Claxton, a former professional basketball player, won an NBA championship in 2003 as a member of the San Antonio Spurs.
