Walnut Street Elementary School Music Teacher Juan Carlos Tavarez Applauded for His Dedication During Teacher Appreciation Week
In honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week, Uniondale Union Free School District celebrated teachers across the District for their dedication to providing scholars with a holistic, safe and inspiring education. Walnut Street Elementary School music teacher, Mr. Juan Carlos Tavarez, was among the teachers highlighted for his teaching methods.
“In the six years Mr. Juan Carlos Tavarez has taught in the Uniondale School District, he has fostered a learning environment that engages all scholars, getting everyone involved,” said Director of Fine and Performing Arts Kelvin Jenkins. “Juan is a leader and an indispensable member of the school community.”
During his tenure in the Uniondale School District, Mr. Tavarez has dedicated himself to creating an engaging and affirming atmosphere within his classroom, working on scholar agency and helping them to build their self-esteem and self confidence in their musical talent and themselves. Mr. Tavarez bases his teaching on five core principles: community, character, curiosity, choice and confidence.
“Mr. Tavarez’s classes are so special because he creates a community within the classroom and helps scholars to find a sense of purpose,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil.
“We’re incredibly thankful to have him.” Mr. Tavarez teaches chorus and general music, passing on the philosophy to his scholars that music begins within the body. Then it is the scholars’ job to transfer it to their instruments.
