UNIONDALE, NEW YORK (March 4, 2023) —Uniondale High School senior Chika Akazi recently competed at the New York State indoor track and field state championships at the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island. Completing the girls 55-meter hurdles in a remarkable 8.21 seconds, Chika claimed the New York State Championship!
Earlier in the competition, Chika was the last qualifier for the 55-meter hurdles, with a time of 8.48. However, she bounced back in the finals, winning the race and improving on her impressive time from last year. At the 2023 competition, Chika placed fourth with a time of 8.38 seconds.
“Chika is a beacon of strength and determination,” said Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil, Superintendent of Uniondale School District. “Her hard work and dedication to the Uniondale team allows for her continued success, which will only continue throughout the future. It is remarkable that she can be both a star athlete and honorable student.”
Outside of the indoor season, Chika also competes in the outdoor track, running in the 400-meter hurdles. In last year’s AAA outdoor track championship, Chika came in second place in the 400 hurdles. She also served as the anchor for Uniondale’s 4-x100 relay, which ultimately placed third and earned the relay team the distinction of All-County honors, one of the highest distinctions for an outdoor track team.
“Chika exemplifies the spirit of what it means to be a track athlete,” said Peter Cardone, Director of Physical Education & Health for Uniondale High School. “She sees a goal and stops at nothing to achieve it, which shines through in her performances.”
