Publishing Tea Party Held for First Grade Scholars
Uniondale Union Free School District’s Grand Avenue Elementary School recently held a Publishing Tea Party. In celebration of early childhood literacy, first-grade classes came together to mark the “publication” of each class book. “Giving scholars a space to express their creativity through writing allows them to develop a better understanding of storytelling, enables them to become more proficient in the language and helps them to become more engaged in the stories they read,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil. “Across each of our elementary schools, we support our scholars in finding their voice through their writing. Events like the Publishing Tea Party are just one of the many ways we work to engage our young scholars in a fun and educational manner.”
Each class went through the entire writing process and created their own “published works” to become “published authors,” with each book designed to illustrate different things that the scholars are thankful for. The success of the Publishing Tea Party helped demonstrate the importance of becoming more advanced at reading and writing, further educating scholars on the writing process and unifying them in celebrating their accomplishments.
Uniondale is proud to provide a robust English Language Arts program led by Director Michelle Davis to provide scholars with the opportunities to develop language skills in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. As writers, scholars are immersed in experiences that will benefit them throughout their life, including experimentation with language, writing through planning and editing, vocabulary development and writing for learning and pleasure through multiple mediums.
