Lisa Hunte, CPA, MBA Class of '01

Lisa A. Hunte, CPA, MBA was raised in the Uniondale School district from kindergarten through Uniondale High School. After graduating in 2001 she attended Fordham University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting with a minor in Information Systems. While working at Cablevision as a  Senior Accountant she attended Hofstra University’s Zarb School of Business where she received her MBA in Taxation. She earned her CPA license and is currently  an International Accounting Manager at the National Basketball Association(NBA). Ms. Hunte is a mentor for the Leadership Training Institute and has served as a Girl Scout Leader for a Uniondale based troop for the Girl Scouts of Nassau County for 14 years. She served as Secretary and Tresurer for the Uniondale Foundation for Educational Excellence (UFEE) where scholarships have been awarded to well deserving graduating seniors.  Lisa has served on the Hempstead/Uniondale Rotary Club which as made several donations of masks and PPD to Uniondale and Hempstead high schools.

Dr. Shayla Shorter, Scientist/ Educator Class of '04

Dr. Shayla Shorter is a scientist, educator and advocate who is passionate about promoting equity, diversity,     justice and inclusion in the biomedical research field.   Upon graduating from Uniondale High School in 2004, she earned a BS in Biological Sciences from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and a PhD in Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis from Emory University. After her doctoral studies, Dr. Shorter was awarded an NIGMS/IRACDA Fellowship in Research and Science Teaching (FIRST) postdoctoral award, which supports postdoctoral scholars with an active interest in both biomedical research and science       education for underrepresented minorities. Her experience as a Black woman living with a chronic illness informs the deeply empathetic approach she brings to her roles as a scientist, educator and an advocate for scientific and medical literacy. Dr. Shorter is currently serving as a Special Assistant Professor at  Hofstra University where she continues to teach students to think critically about science and the many ways in which it impacts their world.

Twyla Sommersell Vocalist/Vocal coach  Class of '04

Twyla Sommersell grew up in the Uniondale School District from primary school to college. Before graduating in 2004, she started the Uniondale High School Gospel Choir in 2003 and managed and directed the choir until 2010 under the tutelage of Dr. Jennifer Huie. She completed her higher education at Adelphi University, specializing in Music Education with a concentration in Vocal Performance. Twyla began teaching private voice lessons to young people and adults, while directing several local choirs.  Twyla currently supports several Uniondale High School students with private vocal coaching, and has supported a number of alumni with preparation for their college vocal auditions. Ms. Sommersell continues to teach and host vocal/songwriting sessions and other musical programs at Uniondale Library. Currently serving as the director of the Hempstead Assembly of God Youth Choir, she continues to create music, perform and share her love of music and her talents with young people.
